The St. Joseph’s Hawks upend nationally ranked Wichita State, 76-69, in the championship game of the Quaker City Classic at the Palestra in Philadelphia. Marty Ford scores 27 points, Billy Oakes has 21 and Cliff Anderson adds 14 for St. Joe’s, coached by Dr. Jack Ramsay. All-American forward Dave “the Rave” Stallworth leads the Wheatshockers with 25 points and is named MVP of the tournament, even in defeat. Not thrilled with the officiating or the rabid Philly fans in the close confines of the hallowed gymnasium, WSU head coach Gary Thompson vows never to return.
